2013 bmw 1 series review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New car test drive. introductionone of the first entry-level luxury cars to hit the u. Market, the bmw 1 series is anything but bargain-basement. With a choice of three powerful six-cylinder engines and dimensions that rival earlier 3 series models, the 1 series are bona fide bmws, complete with precision driving dynamics, premium features and a pricey sticker.  the 2013 bmw 1 series is mostly unchanged over last year, but receives some additional standard features and retooled options. The high-performance 1 series m coupe is gone, replaced by another sporty variant: the 2013 bmw 135is, available in both coupe and convertible body styles. The 2013 bmw 135is is now the most powerful of the bunch, with unique exterior and interior trim.  in some ways, the 1 series is the spiritual successor to the sporty bmw 2002, produced 1968-76, and in some ways the 320i yuppy-mobile that followed. They're available with 6-speed manual or 6-speed steptronic automatic. Bmw says the 128i can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 7. 0 seconds with the automatic, 6. 4 seconds with the manual. Fuel economy for the 2013 bmw 128i coupe is 18/28 mpg city/highway with either transmission; the 2013 bmw 128i convertible achieves 18/27 mpg city/highway with the automatic and 19/28 mpg with the manual.  the bmw 135i features a twin-scroll turbocharged 3. 0-liter inline-6, good for 300 hp and 300 lb.-ft. The bmw 135i coupe and convertible are available with a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, which does not require manual shifting from the driver. A bmw 135i can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5. 4 seconds with the manual gearbox, 5. 3 seconds with the 7-speed dct. Fuel economy from the bmw 135i coupe is 20/28 mpg city/highway with the manual and 18/25 mpg with the dct. Convertibles earn 19/28 mpg city/highway with the manual and 18/25 mpg with the dct.  the 2013 bmw 135is uses a more powerful version of the 135i's turbocharged inline-6, which pumps out 320 hp and 317 lb.-ft. Of torque, and a choice of 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual clutch transmission. The 135is also gets a sport-tuned suspension, additional cooling systems, and a sport exhaust that gives the 135is a throatier growl than the other 1 series models. On the outside, it's differentiated by a high-gloss black kidney grill, black mirror caps, m sport trim and unique 18-inch wheels.  a bmw 1 series convertible can drop its top in just 22 seconds. Top-down motoring is one of life's great joys, so this is a great feature.  the bmw 1 series cars are comfortable, sporty and agile, true driver's cars, with the feel of rear-wheel drive. We found the bmw 128i convertible a delight to drive and it has enough power. More fun to drive is a bmw 135i coupe. A 6-speed manual gearbox comes standard; a 6-speed steptronic automatic is optional (no charge).  the bmw 128i convertible 36,900) adds a power-folding soft top and a different wheel style, and does not have rear folding seats.  the bmw 135i coupe 39,300) includes a firmer sport suspension and high-performance brakes, m sport aero body kit, adaptive xenon headlights with washers, sunroof and 18-inch wheels. A 6-speed manual is standard the 7-speed dct dual clutch automated manual transmission is optional 450).  the bmw 135i convertible 44,100) omits the coupe's body kit and folding seats (and hard top) and rides on 17-inch wheels.  the bmw 135is coupe 43,250) and convertible 47,950) get a more powerful version of the turbocharged inline-6, sport front seats, and unique exterior and interior trim. Cars equipped with the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission get steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.  options for 1 series include a premium package, which upgrades to genuine leather upholstery, additional ambient lighting, universal garage door opener, keyless entry, auto-dimming mirrors and satellite radio with one-year subscription. The cole weather package adds heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. The technology package adds navigation with real-time traffic information, voice recognition, smartphone integration with bmw apps and the bmw assist crash notification service.  safety features on all 1 series include dual front airbags, seat-mounted front side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags (coupe only), abs, electronic stability control, traction control, cornering brake control, and launch control for getting started on slippery surfaces. The brake lights include a panic-braking mode that lights up the entire lens extra bright whenever the brake pedal is stomped hard. walkaroundthe bmw 1 series is short in the rear compared to the larger 3 series, but it looks good that way. It doesn't look cheap or cut off or bandaged. Every major part of the car, the nose, the bodyside, the roof and the rear end, blends with the rest of the car to make a shorter, narrower version of the 3 series with a different and special roofline. Some would argue, however, that the slab-like sides are bland compared to other, more sculpted bmws.  we like the 135i's aerodynamics package with the huge air intakes below the bumper, necessary for cooling the turbocharger intake air. At the rear, the 135i has a prominent spoiler, while the 128i uses a more gentle lip integrated into the trunk lid. The 128i rear bumper is entirely body-color, lacking the black-out panel seen on the 135i. Drag coefficient on the 128i coupe is 0. 31 cd vs. The 135i coupe's 0. 33 cd.  put the top down on the convertible models, and the flared shoulder line that's shared with the coupes seems to form a single surface that surrounds the interior, like the deck of a small boat. Just about everything inside is in the same location and looks and operates the same way.  we found the front bucket seats to be very comfortable and supportive, with big side bolsters. It includes a central control knob with a separate menu button, while other version add cd, tel, radio, nav, back and option buttons around the controller. Those extra buttons provide easier access various functions, eliminating a few steps. Both versions require some time to learn, but the system in the 1 series is a little more daunting. Having tried idrive numerous times, we're used to it and not entirely annoyed, but many drivers find it overly complicated.  all 1 series coupes come with a 60/40 split folding rear seat than can almost triple the trunk's 10 cubic feet of space. A storage package for the trunk area includes some tie-downs and straps and a 12-volt power point for external accessories. The soft top takes up less trunk space than a convertible hard top would, which is partly why the design uses a soft top. Still, it eats up two cubic feet of cargo space, leaving 8 cubic feet, which is small but not too bad for a convertible.  the convertible's interior room suffers a bit, though hardly enough for a real convertible enthusiast to notice. Front leg room is reduced by a quarter inch, and head room by three-quarters of an inch. The losses in rear-seat room are more consequential, where shoulder room contracts by nearly a foot. Leg room is reduced by three-quarters of an inch, and head room by just 0. 1 inch. Coupe or convertible, the two-passenger rear seat is rather inhospitable. 2011 bmw 1 series review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Inspiration for the 1 series came from the bmw 2002 of some 40 years ago (1968-76).  the 2011 bmw 1 series comes in coupe and convertible models in two versions: the bmw 128i and the bmw 135i.  the 2011 bmw 135i benefits from an all-new inline-6 engine, here using a single turbocharger to produce 300 horsepower, and paired with the sporty 7-speed dual clutch transmission from the z4 roadster. (code-named n55, the 2011 engine replaces last year's 300-hp twin-turbo inline-6.) the 2011 bmw 135i is also available with a 6-speed manual gearbox, which we found silky smooth and a pleasure to operate. Fuel economy from the 135i even edges that of the 128i, with an epa-estimated 20/28 mpg city/highway for a 2011 135i coupe.  the 2011 bmw 128i coupe and convertible continue to be powered by the normally aspirated 3. 0-liter inline-6 that generates 230 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque. They're available with 6-speed manual or 6-speed steptronic automatic.  an m sport package adds a sports suspension that favors handling over ride quality.  the bmw 1 series is nearly seven inches shorter overall than the 3 series. The 1 series brings bmw's highly developed rear-wheel-drive platform to compete with cars in the entry luxury coupe class that mostly use front-wheel drive.  in many ways, the 1 series is nothing more or less than a scaled-down version of the 3 series, with similar looks, similar equipment and similar performance and handling. Indeed, it uses many of the same components and systems. The 135i is a smaller, lighter package with the same engine as the 3 series for a lot less money. The bmw 1 series was launched in the u. As a 2008 model, initially only as a coupe.  we like these cars. They're comfortable, sitting in one is like sitting in a 3 series. Underway, they are sporty and agile, driver's cars, with the feel of rear-wheel drive. We found a 128i convertible is a delight and it has enough power. Most fun to drive is a 135i coupe, though we recommend against the m suspension due to the hard ride. A 6-speed manual gearbox comes standard, a 6-speed automatic is optional 1,375).  the bmw 135i coupe 36,050) includes a firmer sport suspension and high-performance brakes, m sport aero body kit, adaptive xenon headlights with washers, sunroof, gray poplar wood interior trim, and p215/40yr18 front tires leading p245/35yr18 rears. A 6-speed manual is standard. New for 2011 is an optional 7-speed dct dual clutch automated manual transmission 1,575).  the bmw 128i convertible 34,200) and bmw 135i convertible 40,350) are equipped similarly to their coupe counterparts, except they don't have folding rear seats or a sunroof, and they ride on less radical rubber. The 128i soft top comes with p205/55hr16 run-flat rubber front and rear, while the 135i convertible gets p205/50r17 run-flat tires. Both come with a fully automatic fabric folding top. The 135i convertible does not have the coupe's body kit. A 6-speed manual gearbox comes standard on both 1 series convertibles; the 6-speed automatic is optional on the 128i 1,375); the 7-speed dct is optional for 135i 1,575).  options include a sport package 1,300) for the 128i models includes the sport suspension, sport seats, shadowline exterior trim, an increased top-speed limiter, and p205/50r17 front and p225/45r17 rear run-flat tires. The coupe also gets a black headliner. The m sport package for the 135i coupe 1,300) and 135i convertible 1,200) includes the increased top-speed limiter, m sport seats, m sport steering wheel, black headliner (coupe), shadowline trim, body cladding, and 18-inch performance tires.  a premium package upgrades with leather upholstery, 8-way power front seats with lumbar adjustment, memory for the driver's seat and mirrors, bmw assist telematics service, bluetooth wireless cell phone link, auto-dimming power-folding exterior mirrors, wood interior trim, universal garage door opener, auto-dimming rearview mirror, compass, illuminated visor mirrors, and additional interior lights. The 128i coupe version also includes a sunroof. A convenience package includes rear park assist, keyless access and starting, steering-linked adaptive xenon headlights, and an alarm. A cold weather package 900) adds heated front seats, a trunk pass-through with a ski sack, and headlight washers.  standalone options include leather upholstery 1,450), heated front seats 500), heated steering wheel 150), navigation system 2,100), bmw assist 750) with bluetooth connectivity, sirius satellite radio 350), ipod/usb adapter 400), smartphone integration 150), steering wheel shift paddles 120), harman kardon audio 875), 8-way power front seats 995), and adaptive xenon headlights 900). Wood trim is available on the 128i 500) and can be omitted from the 135i (for no charge).  safety features that come standard on the 1 series include dual front airbags, seat-mounted front side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags (coupe only), abs, electronic stability control, traction control, cornering brake control, and launch control for getting started on slippery surfaces. The brake lights include a panic-braking mode that lights up the entire lens extra bright whenever the brake pedal is stomped hard. The federally mandated tire-pressure monitor is standard. walkaroundthe bmw 1 series is definitely short in the rear compared to the larger 3 series, but it looks good that way. Every major part of the car, the nose, the bodyside, the roof and the rear end, blends with the rest of the car to make a shorter, narrower version of the 3 series with a different and special roofline. Some would argue, however, that the slab-like sides are bland compared to other, more sculpted bmws.  we're fond of the m aerodynamics package standard on the 135i, including the huge air intakes below the bumper, necessary for cooling the turbocharger intake air. The 128i has a cleaner, albeit more conventional, full-width opening below the bumper, divided into three parts by two angled struts. The outboard sections are then sub-divided horizontally, with a fog light at the top and a small grille underneath. The bottom edge of the opening turns up at the ends, smile-like.  at the rear, the 128i dispenses with the 135i's prominent spoiler, in favor of a more gentle lip integrated into the trunk lid. And the 128i's rear bumper is entirely body-color, lacking the black-out panel seen on the 135i. Drag coefficient actually improves, from 0. 33 to 0. 31 cd.  put the top down on the convertible models, and the flared shoulder line that's shared with the coupes seems to form a single surface that surrounds the interior, like the deck of a small boat. Just about everything inside is in the same location and looks and operates the same way.  we found the front bucket seats to be very comfortable and supportive, with big side bolsters. It doesn't look cheap or cut off or bandaged. Every major part of the car, the nose, the bodyside, the roof and the rear end, blends with the rest of the car to make a shorter, narrower version of the 3 series with a different and special roofline. Some would argue, however, that the slab-like sides are bland compared to other, more sculpted bmws.  we're fond of the m aerodynamics package standard on the 135i, including the huge air intakes below the bumper, necessary for cooling the turbocharger intake air. It includes a central control knob with a separate menu button, while other version add cd, tel, radio, nav, back and option buttons around the controller. Those extra buttons provide easier access various functions, eliminating a few steps. Both versions require some time to learn, but the system in the 1 series is a little more daunting. 1996 bmw 3 series review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Although it's a modest update on its predecessor, the 325i, modest doesn't mean that updates aren't substantial. Bmw doesn't do things just for show.  we had a chance to drive the 328i sedan and 328is coupe in the wide open spaces of nevada and california, a trek that wound its way from death valley--at 282 ft. Below sea level, the lowest point in the country--to the mammoth mountain ski area, some 8000 ft. The combination of trim dimensions, wide track and limited front overhang--the portion of the car that extends beyond the front wheels--gives the 3-series family an exceptionally purposeful appearance, lean, mean and action-ready.  this is a large family. In addition to the 328i sedan and 328is coupe, coupe, it includes the 318ti hatchback coupe 20,560), 318i sedan and 318is coupe 25,950 and $27,700, respectively), the 318i convertible 32,750), 328i convertible 41,390) and, a close cousin, the 2-seat z3 roadster 28,750).  an update on the 240-hp hot rod m3 coupe will be along later this year.  the biggest news in the new 328s lies under the hood, where a 2. 8-liter inline 6-cyl. Engine replaces the previous 2. 5-liter version. The new engine generates 190 hp at 5300 rpm, compared to 189 at 5900 for the 325i, and it will propel the car up to 128 mph, which is where the electronic speed limiter kicks in. Getting from zero to 60 mph is a matter of about 7 seconds.  but the improvement in torque--207 lb.-ft. At 3950 rpm vs. 181 at 4200--is what's really noticeable. The 328i provides impressive pulling power, even at high altitudes in 5th gear, and the inline 6-cyl. Is smoother than ever.  transmission choices are the usual--5-speed manual standard, 4-speed automatic optional 975). Wheelbase is proportionately quite long, a key factor in its ride quality and good looks. By epa classification, it's actually a subcompact, but it's actually more spacious than that. interiorlike other bmws, the 328s provide a driver command center that conjures up images of light aircraft--businesslike analog dials placed for optimum visibility, key controls placed within easy reach, everything illuminated in a reddish glow by night, to reduce driver eyestrain.  audio and climate controls are mounted well up in the center of the dash, and in a car this size nothing is hard to reach.  the seats are typical bmw, which is to say sporty, supportive and long-haul comfortable. The snug feeling augments the sporty character of the car, and 8-way power adjustability makes the car tailorable for virtually any body type.  the basic upholstery material is a high-grade leatherette. Aluminum alloy wheels with zr-rated tires, plus a sportier seat configuration, with more pronounced thigh and torso bolstering.  front seat leg and headroom is ample, which is typical of most small sedans and coupes. In fact, it's more than consistent. Major comfort/convenience features like automatic climate control, an am/fm/cassette sound system, power windows and mirrors, keyless remote entry, cruise control and even a power sunroof.  passive safety features are current with the automotive mainstream--dual airbags, side impact protection and height-adjustable upper seatbelt anchors. Bmw has begun introducing side airbags in its more expensive models, but that technology hasn't trickled down to this level yet. Traction control is available as an $1100 option.  active safety is a stronger suit at bmw. The power rack and pinion steering, which varies the level of assist according to engine--rather than vehicle--speed is on the light side in terms of across-the-board effort, but it's bmw-precise and enhances the car's excellent sense of control.  bmw has been making ride-quality improvements in all its recent cars, and that applies to the new 328i. The basic 328i sedan has enough suspension compliance to sop up small bumps and potholes without transmitting the shocks to the occupants. P205/60r) mounted on 16-in. Wheels on the basic sedan. Ride quality is firmer, and it's easier to feel those small bumps, but we prefer the enhanced crisper handling response.  the new 2. 8-liter engine is a joy to live with. Bmw has been building inline 6-cyl. Engines for a long time, a corporate powertrain priority based on the inherently low vibration traits of this configuration. This latest update is as smooth as any that bmw has produced, and as we noted earlier it's got plenty of grunt in the lower rpm ranges, something that's not true of all small-displacement multi-valve powerplants.  in addition to the near-absence of vibration and impressive power, the 2. 8-liter six is also exceptionally quiet at most operating speeds. Allied with good aerodynamic traits and extra sound insulation, this adds up to a quieter passenger cabin.  the 328's braking performance is world-class. All models have large brake rotors at both ends of the car--11. 3-in. Rear--and all the rotors are ventilated for improved cooling. Stops are quick, sure and repeatable. But the rewards that go with ownership of this car make it well worth the money. assembled ingermany. options as testedleather seating, sport suspension, 16-in. 1999 bmw 3-series review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A large percentage of those critics -- maybe a half, maybe two thirds -- will say the bmw 328i.  sure, the critics are biased. They tend to put a high priority on performance, and bmw's 3 series has always performed. The 328i's stock in trade is a sporting flair that few if any comparably priced sedans can match. So with its redesigned 1999 model, bmw tried to make the 3 series more comfortable for passengers. The new 328i is roomier, smoother and quieter than ever. Indeed, bmw has done such a good job making the 328i a pleasant place to spend time that a few of those critics might say the car has gotten a little too refined. Over the next two years the company will roll out coupes, convertibles and an m3 -- the true hot rod of compact sedans -- based on the new 3 series chassis. At a base price of $26,970, the 323i doesn't give up much to its more expensive sibling. But for the full-force kick in the backside that 3 series owners love, the 328i (base price (msrp) $33,875) is the way to go.  the 1999 3 series is slightly larger than the '98 models. Its wheelbase is 1 inch longer, while its overall length has increased 1. 5 inches, and its track nearly 3 inches. In practical terms, the change is most obvious in the cabin. Interior volume has increased 5 cubic feet, and the extra space translates into more rear leg and shoulder room. The 328i is now roomier than competitors such as the mercedes-benz c-class or the audi a4, according to the government's standard for measuring interior volume.  nearly every part in the 328i has been improved. The suspension components are lighter, yet stronger. There are new vibration dampening devices throughout the car, including hydraulic mounts for the differential and front suspension. The body shell has more high-strength steel, and it all works to reduce the noise and vibration in the 328i's cabin.  the styling is a fresh turn on a classic look. The traditional quad headlamps are enclosed in aerodynamic covers; the roofline is longer, and more gracefully integrated into the rear deck. Fitting a higher level of refinement throughout the car, the 328i looks a little more elegant, although its appearance is as striking as ever.  along with standard front and front side-impact airbags, the 3 series gets head protection airbags that deploy from the headliner along the length of both sides of the cabin. Rear side-impact airbags are optional. With all 3 series models, the purchase price includes scheduled maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles -- a perk often reserved for more expensive cars. interiorthe most frequent complaints about the old 328i centered on its spartan interior, which, for the money, looked just a little too cheap. A new two-tone finish addresses that complaint. The dashboard and door panels are richer in appearance, and much more appealing to the eye. Different trim packages offer a choice of myrtle wood inserts or plastic that looks like polished aluminum. The instrument panel still features the orange backlighting bmw enthusiasts swear by.  in design, the dashboard is less directly focused on the driver, and opened more toward the front passenger. Still, all the switches fall intuitively to the driver's fingertips. In short order, the audio and cruise control buttons on the steering-wheel hub become second nature to operate. With an electronic beep, this system warns the driver of low objects that might be invisible from the cabin during parking maneuvers.  the 328i's standard seats are very good, providing fine support without feeling hard. The sport seats that come with the optional sport package are superb, adding more side bolstering for the hard driving this bmw thrives on. The back seat is roomy enough for two adults during a night on the town (three in a pinch), but bear in mind that this sedan is a compact. Yet for all its high-rev power, the 328i is surprisingly strong at lower engine speeds. Beyond that, gear changing is a smooth, satisfying operation, and, boy, is this sedan fast. The 328i hits 60 mph from a stop in 6. 4 seconds, making it a benchmark in its class.  the 328i is a very stiff car, in the instance where 'stiff' describes a rigid body that feels like it's carved from a single piece of granite. The stiff structure allows very little irritating vibration into the 328i's cabin, and even less in the way of squeaks and rattles. It also allows the suspension to work at its best.  as a result, the 328i delivers steering response that's more in line with a true sports car than the typical sedan. It handles curves with aplomb, and keeps its composure, always gripping, through the most aggressive cornering maneuvers. It also has two bmw trademarks polished to a luster: brakes that stop the car right now, and a high level of ride comfort for its cornering capabilities. The ride is anything but stiff. It's firm and well controlled, to be sure, but the 328i is never rough or jarring over typical bumps or potholes.  enthusiast drivers prefer rear-wheel drive because, in a car with a good power-to-weight ratio like the 328i, they can actually steer the car by sending a burst of power to the back wheels. The payback for this added element of control can be a skittish rear end on slick surfaces, or a condition known as oversteer. That's the package true driving enthusiasts prefer, and bmw's commitment to this combination speaks volumes about the company's priorities.  other cars in this price range surpass the 328i in significant areas. The oldsmobile aurora has far more room inside. The lexus es 300 is smoother, and as quiet as an attack submarine in stealth mode. Yet with a thorough redesign for the 1999 model year, bmw has closed the gap in areas where the 328i previously fell short, and eliminated any discrepancy in others. Indeed, BMW has done such a good job making the 328i a pleasant place to spend time that a few of those critics might say the ca. The 328i's stock in trade is a sporting flair that few if any comparably priced sedans can match. 1999 BMW 3 Series Review This car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale Tachometer✔ Power Windows✔ Climate Control✔ Cruise Control✔ Sport Package
