Packing a snarling 390 cubic inch V8 and an automatic transmission (the "A" part of GTA), as well as sparkling good looks, this is a rare piece of Ford muscle. With a more grown-up look than the Mustang, this Fairlane is a great study in contrasts, with a black rocker stripe to match the vinyl top, so it looks grown-up, not like a boy racer

1956 Ford Fairlane - Fort Worth, TXStreetside ClassicsFort Worth, TX 76137Ph: 8558772707Web: www. Finished in totally '50s colors, this 1956 Ford Fairlane Crown Victoria packs a great-running 302, a superbly done interior, and enough nostalgia to fuel an Elvis impersonator convention. For reasons that nobody can adequately explain, the Fords are lagging behind their Chevy competition, despite each team selling roughly the same number of cars. But that's great news for Ford guys, because it puts us in some seriously cool hardware for a fraction of the cost. Someone spent big on this Fairlane, giving it a luscious two-tone paint in Fiesta Red and Colonial White that's very high-visibility and definitely ideal for this car. The shine is deep thanks to a professional cut and buff, and there's just no mistaking one of the most iconic designs of the '50s. A sizable fortune was surely invested in all that chrome, because all of it is in excellent shape and freshly polished, but nothing has been shaved or deleted in the restoration. Door panels that look like art are a colorful compliment, and the dark red carpets add a sense of balance to the interior, just so it isn't red overload. The original gauges are still in the dash, framed by a modern 3-spoke steering wheel with a red leather wrapper and hanging on the original steering column, and there is a trio of auxiliary gauges under the dash. The original AM radio remains in the dash but it's disabled and probably due for an upgrade, and thanks to the modern engine up front, adding A/C was a snap and lives in a low-profile under-dash unit that looks right for 1956. Correct plaid mats in the trunk make it look right and there's a band new full-sized spare tire assembly for emergencies. The builder gets big kudos for keeping his Ford with Ford power, and there are few better choices for the modern builder than the bulletproof 302. It is an ATK roller motor and thanks to a Holley 4-barrel carburetor, MSD ignition system, and Weiand intake manifold, the engine starts and runs like it was factory-installed. It's nicely detailed with a few chrome dress up parts, plenty of Ford blue, and a serpentine belt drive system for the accessories. An AOD 4-speed automatic transmission rebuilt by Phoenix makes for effortless driving on and off the highway and it powers the stock rear end, so it's a fantastic cruiser. Classically dressed, this nicely detailed and well-finished vicky captures the perfect 1950s vibe of sock hops, drive-ins, and doo-wop music on the radio, all in a very appealing package. Code xd regatta blue and waterfall blue are this car's original combination, so the two-tone combination is entirely appropriate on the flashy ford and definitely looks like it belongs there. It shows age, but it could almost pass for nice original paint, so it's got that going for it. They used factory break lines on the body to make it authentic and that sweeping stainless side spear provides the perfect place to separate the colors. Gorgeous bumpers with oversized guards, the jet-inspired taillights, and classic concave grille give it a wonderful look that's impossible to ignore. The interior matches the bodywork, but it's a lot more subdued so it's easy to live with. The patterns on the bench seats look authentic and it matches the door tag that says it's code ay medium blue and light blue vinyl. It's possible that it's original and it's showing some age, with the only notable upgrade being a sony am/fm/cd stereo in its own little box under the dash. The rest, however, is completely stock, including the rounded speedometer with plexiglas window in the back and the three round pods in the center that handle heat, entertainment, and time. The trunk is neatly finished with a correct mat as well as a matching wide whitewall radial, just in case. The 272 cubic inch y-block v8 engine is correct for 1955 and provides decent performance and a bubbly attitude. It's correctly dressed in ford red engine enamel and wears simple stamped steel ford valve covers. Again, it's somewhere between nicely preserved original and older restoration, although the shiny radiator is newer, the carb has been recently rebuilt and the fuel pump looks recent. The oil bath air cleaner, the 6-volt electrical system, and the familiar y-block cast iron exhaust manifolds all reinforce the old-school vibe. The underside is also nicely preserved, with the light blue floors making a great background for the satin black frame and suspension components. Glasspack-style mufflers offer a punchy '50s sound that's nice and mellow, and the original hubcaps are framed by 205/75/15 wide whitewall radials. AM/FM

Nicely rendered in Snowshoe White and Sea Sprite Green, it's a wonderful example of just how stylish even the everyday cars were back in the 1950s. Dramatic styling and two-tone paint make this car a favorite everywhere it goes and nothing drives quite like a car that's never been taken apart. Somewhere in between was the Fairlane, and this 1955 Ford Fairlane Club Sedan is an awesome survivor that's been maintained, but never restored
